Some users' departments may create their accounts before the users actually arrive at the department. If you are given your account information by your department contact in advance, you can start using and checking your email address and web space immediately. See the How-To section for more information.
Each new user will be given a username and password by their department contact. Please do not contact CLASnet for an account; we only accept account requests from the department computer contacts. Your contact should give you a basic introduction to the computer you will use and also instruct you on the use of the email system.
All users are expected to be familiar with the account policies of CLAS and UF. Your contact should tell you about them, and you can review the policies at any time on the web. If you have questions about policies or procedures, please talk with you department contact.
If you need general information you can look at the How-To section of our web pages or ask your department contact. If you need specific assistance with your computer or any CLAS service, please ask your contact. Departmental computer contacts are the first point of contact for every CLAS user. They can answer most day-to-day questions, and escalate problems to the CLASnet staff as needed.
All CLAS users have an email account, web space, and disk space to store files. File space includes both personal storage and shared space where you can store files and other people will have access to them. Users with desktop PCs can access the web and other file spaces through automatically mapped drive letters. MacOS users can mount server drives under MacOS X and Classic. Other users can access space via FTP.
When you are given your account, you have your user ID, which is
two to eight characters, and usually includes your first initial and
all or part of your last name. This user ID, in combination with your
department's domain name (eg. english.ufl.edu or
polisci.ufl.edu) make up your email address. A user named
Jane Doe, who was issued the user ID jdoe and worked for
History would have the email address
jdoe@history.ufl.edu for example.
Because CLAS serves so many departments, users may also recive
email addressed to them @clas.ufl.edu or at any other
department CLAS serves. Users can set filters in their email client to
delete or automatically file messags which are addressed to their user
ID at another department. Similar filters can be used to block
unsolicited commercial email (UCE ak.a. spam).
CLAS also has mailing lists for courses, departmental groups, and
other uses. A user may receive email to a departmental list, such as
grads@english.ufl.edu if they are an English graduate
student or faculty@geron.ufl.edu if they are a
Gerontology faculty member. Every CLAS user is automatically
subscribed to the appropriate departmental list based on their
affiliation (faculty, staff, grad, etc.) and their primary
department.
If you need a mailing list for a course you are teaching you can request it with the course list form. If you want a general-purpose mailing list for a project or group, use the general list form.
All UF employees and students have a GatorLink account which provides an additional email address, access to the Grove computer system and access to password-protected information on campus web sites including MyUFL. Your GatorLink username and password will be different from your CLAS username and password, and you need to keep track of both.
You can maintain and check your GatorLink email separately from your CLAS account, or you can forward your email from one account to the other and check your all of your UF email in one place. If you want to forward your GatorLink email to CLAS, you can do so from the GatorLink web site. If you prefer to forward your CLAS email to GatorLink you can do so with this form.
Please note, the university may send you official correspondence to your GatorLink address, and the college may send official correspondence to your CLAS address. You are accountable for reading important notices at both addresses, so do not ignore either one.
At some point most users will have a computer at home or at some other location which they wish to use with their UF accounts. We have information on remote access, and if you use GatorLink to dial in to the campus network you can contact the UF Computing Help Desk at (352) 392-HELP or helpdesk@ufl.edu.
